Cougars avoid winless record at provincials

The College Heights Cougars were competitive at the junior girls high school basketball provincial championship tournament but managed just one win in four games.

At provincials, which concluded Saturday in Langley, the Cougars picked up their lone victory against the Charles Hays Rainmakers of Prince Rupert. College Heights downed Charles Hays 60-36.

The Cougars started the tournament with a 57-38 setback against the Seycove Seahawks of North Vancouver and then lost 54-33 to the Oak Bay Breakers of Victoria. After the win against the Rainmakers, the Cougars met the Nechako Valley Viqueens of Vanderhoof and lost 44-35.

Members of the Cougars are Laura Appleby, Anika Rai, Emily Fuller, Gracie Campbell, Jessica Nycholat, Eden Gladesdahl, Brooklyn Nicholson, Kathryn Chrobot, Lauren Chrobot and Kaitlyn Joyce.

In the championship game, Riverside of Port Coquitlam defeated South Kamloops 46-32.

Four local senior teams began play at their provincial tournaments on Wednesday. On the girls side, the PGSS Polars (triple-A) and Duchess Park Condors (double-A) are in Langley and the Cedars Christian School Eagles (single-A) are in Lumby.

On the boys side, the D.P. Todd Trojans are also in Langley for the double-A provincial tournament. Next week, the PGSS Polars will be in the same location for the start of the quadruple-A championship.
