The Prince George Cougars have allowed more goals per game than 19 of the 22 teams in the Western Hockey League.
On Wednesday the Cougars made a move to help shore up their porous defence, acquiring six-foot-two, 185-pound defenceman Wil Tomchuk from the Tri-City Americans for a conditional fourth-round bantam draft pick in 2015.
The 19-year-old native of Fort McMurray, Alta., has one assist and a plus-four rating in 25 games this season with the Americans. Heading into Wednesday's game against Seattle, rookie Tate Olson, at plus-2, was the only other Cougar defenceman with a positive plus-minus rating.
Tomchuk is a veteran of 90 WHL games, collecting one goal four points and 91 penalty minutes while wearing a Tri-City uniform. Tomchuk will join the Cougars on the road this weekend when they visit Vancouver on Friday and Kamloops on Saturday.
He won't be available to play until next Friday at the earliest as he recovers from wrist surgery.
