The Duchess Park Condors are two wins away from the provincial triple-A boys basketball title.
The Condors booked themselves a semifinal berth Thursday afternoon in Langley after they defeated the Pitt Meadows Marauders 84-68,
Caleb Lyons led the way offensively with a 28-point game, while Jackson Kuc finished with 19 points.
The Condors, ranked No. 1 in the province, will face the Sir Charles Tupper Tigers of Vancouver in a semifinal Friday at 3:30 p.m. No. 2 Vernon and will take on No. 3 G.W. Graham of Chilliwack in the other semifinal at 5:15 p.m. Friday. The winners meet in the gold-medal game Saturday at 6 p.m.
Last year in the semifinal round, the Condors lost 62-61 to the North Delta Huskies, who scored a pivotal three-point shot with less than three seconds left. The Condors came home with bronze and the Huskies went on to win gold.
“It was one of our goals to get back to this game, and it wasn’t the prettiest of things,” Condors head coach Jordan Yu told Howard Tsumura of Varsity Letters.
“But all the credit goes to Pitt Meadows, because they are a scrappy team."
Emir Zejnulahovic collected 13 points and eight rebounds and his Condor teammate Connor Lewis chipped in with 12 points and four assists. Iman Ostovari paced the Marauders with 20 points.
“We’re blessed with some longer guards and overall height so we can switch a lot of things,” said Yu. “So we just tried to stay in front of them, challenge shots, and then box out and get going in transition because we didn’t want to see that press of theirs. We needed to get some easy hoops.”
Meanwhile, at the single-A championship in Langley, the ninth-ranked Cedars Christian Eagles lost a quarterfinal playoff 79-66 Thursday night to Highroad Academy. Evan Staves scored 26 points and Ben Wolitski had 24 to lead the Eagles.
Cedars will play Barriere Friday at 8:45 p.m.
In other single-A action, the McBride Mustangs dropped to 0-3 Friday morning after a 79-70 loss to Deer Lake. The Northside Christian Northstars of Vanderhoof (1-1) play Similkameen at 1:45 p.m.
At the double-A boys championship also in Langley, the seventh-ranked D.P. Todd Trojans (1-1) will be back on the court Friday at 5:15 p.m. to play Southridge of Surrey.
The Trojans lost 80-61 to No. 10 Mulgrave in their first game Wednesday and rebounded Thursday morning with an 89-69 win over No. 15 J.L. Crowe.
At the quad-A tournament, the Prince George Polars (0-2) will play Frank Hurt of Surrey in a consolation round matchup Friday at 10:15 a.m.
