Condors continue to rule City League roost

Duchess Park dynasty?

It sure looks that way, after both senior teams did the expected and won their respective girls and boys City League championships.

The Condor girls got their hands on the trophy for the seventh-straight year Tuesday night at the Northern Sport Centre, where they defeated the Prince George Polars 87-34.

The Condor boys, the top-ranked triple-A team in the province, completed the City League trifecta against their crosstown rivals, the D.P. Todd Trojans. They topped the Trojans 66-43 in the late game Tuesday, their third-straight win over D.P. Todd in the city final. Duchess Park has won the title in each of the past six years.

The Condor girls built a 25-0 lead and increased the gap to 46-11 at the half. Logan Cruz was the high shooter with 19 points. Hannah Louckes finished with 15, Jayda Pigeau collected 13  and Talisa Ferguson contributed eight points.

Nina Gajic led the Polars with 14 points, while Gurveet Thandhi picked up seven.

The Condors, ranked eighth in the province, will use that as a tuneup for this week's North Central triple-A zone championship. Top-seeded Duchess Park opens the four-team tournament Thursday at 6 p.m. against Correlieu of Quesnel. Dawson Creek and College Heights play each other Thursday at 7:45 p.m.

In the boys city final, the Condors took an 18-10 lead after one quarter and were ahead 39-20 at haltime. Emir Zejnulahovic shot a team-high 18 points and Caleb Lyons and Jackson Kuc each finished with 10. Cameron Sale led all shooters with 22 points and his Trojan teammate Holden Black picked up 13.

The Condors (19-3 this season) will head to Edmonton for the Harry Ainlay tournament this  weekend. They'll be back on the court next week as the top seed at the triple-A boys zone championship, starting Thursday, Feb. 20 at College Heights Secondary School. The host Cougars are ranked third in the five-team event.
