The Duchess Park Condors have guaranteed themselves a shot at a medal.
They defeated the Pacific Academy of Surrey 3-0 (26-24, 25-14, 27-25) in a quarterfinal playoff Thursday afternoon at the 16-team double-A boys provincial high school volleyball championship in Victoria.
The Condors will face host Pacific Christian of Victoria in a semifinal match Friday at 4 p.m. Pacific Christian eliminated W.L. Seaton 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 26-24) in a quarterfinal match earlier this afternoon.
The College Heights Cougars tried to keep their championship hopes alive but were knocked into the consolation side after a straight set 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-22) quarterfinal loss to Langley Christian. Langley will play MEI of Abbotsford in the other semifinal Friday afternoon.
College Heights will play Revelstoke Friday at 2 p.m. for the right to play in a later match that will decide fifth place.
Earlier in the day, the fifth-seeded Cougars Hugh McRoberts of Richmond 3-0 (25-19, 25-19. 25-18).
The No. 3-seeded Condors started their day Thursday with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-16) match victory over St Michaels University of Victoria. On Wednesday, Duchess Park went 0-3 in the Pool A seeding round. They lost to Langley Christian 2-0 (19-25, 20-25), Pacific Christian, 2-0 (14-25, 20-25) and MEI 2-1 (25-19, 17-25, 10-15).
College Heights placed second in Pool B with a 2-1 record. The Cougars beat W.L. Seaton 2-1 (25-18, 10-25, 15-13) and Revelstoke 2-1 (20-25, 25-16, 15-10) and lost to Pacific Academy 2-0 (17-25, 15-25).
Meanwhile, at the single-A boys provincial championship in Nanaimo, the No. 2-ranked Cedars Christian Eagles lost their opening three matches Thursday
Cedars lost to No. 3 Vancouver Christian 2-0 (23-25, 14-25) and to top-ranked Abbotsford Christian 2-1 (25-21, 19-25, 11-15). The Eagles took on Nanaimo Christian later in the afternoon and lost 2-1 (22-25,.25-22, 13-15).. Cedars was due to take on Credo Christian at 7:45 p.m.
At the 13-team double-A girls championship in Abbotsford, the D.P. Todd Trojans lost their first two matches but found their winning touch late in the day. They took on Abbotsford Christian to start and lost 2-0 (6-25, 20-25), then dropped a 2-1 decision (25-23, 10-25, 13-15) to St. Michael’s University.
The Trojans then defeated MacNeil of Richmond 2-0 (25-16, 25-18).
D. P. Todd is matched with Mulgrave in a placement game Friday at 10:30 a. m. If the Trojans win, they'll move on to face Brentwood in a quarterfinal at 4 p.m. The winner of that advances to the semifinal round Saturday at 11 a.m.
At the seven-team single-A girls championship in Castlegar, Cedars Christian lost its opener Thursday 2-0 to Osoyoos (12-25, 17-25), then came back with three straight match wins, including a hard-fought 2-1 (23-25, 28-26, 15-13) victory over the Fort St. James Falcons.
The Eagles also beat Ebenezer Canadian Reformed School of Smithers 2-0 (25-20, 25-21) and Charles Bloom of Lumby 2-1 (25-15, 24-26, 15-11).
The Fort St. James Falcons opened with a 2-1 (25-16, 23-25, 15-9) win over Kings Christian of Salmon Arm, then lost 2-0 (21-25, 17-25) to host Mt. Sentinel.
Cedars and Mt. Sentinel will meet Friday at 11:30 a.m. to wrap up round-robin play.
Meanwhile, at the 14-team triple-A girls championship in Vancouver, the Duchess Park Condors pulled out a narrow victory over the Crofton Falcons, winning 2-1 (25-20, 8-25, 16-14). The Condors lost their afternoon match 2-1 (25-23, 23-25, 8-25) to the W.L. Seaton Sonics.
Duchess Park finished second in its pool and will play Vernon in a best-of-five quarterfinal Friday at 8:30 p.m. The winner advance to the semifinals against the Dawson Creek-Langley winner Friday at 12:30 p. m.
All provincial medal games will be played on Saturday.
