It came down to one head-to-head match Thursday afternoon to decide the fate of the College Heights Cougars and the D.P. Todd Trojans at the double-A boys provincial volleyball championship in Kelowna.
The winner of the all-Prince George playoff would go on to play a quarterfinal, while the loser would drop to the consolation side of the 16-team tournament.
The No. 7-ranked Cougars advanced with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 23-35, 25-19) win over their crosstown rivals, the No. 10-ranked Trojans.
In the quarterfinal that followed late Thursday night, the Cougars faced the No. 2-ranked Langley Fundamental.
The Trojans went on to lose a consolation quarterfinal match on Thursday afternoon 2-0 (25-23, 25-22) to No. 15 George Elliot of Lake Country.
Meanwhile, at the single-A girls championship in Duncan, the Cedars Christian Eagles are a perfect 3-0 after their opening-day matches, all won in straight sets. Cedars swept A.L. Fortune of Enderby 25-8, 25-12, knocked off Langley 25-18, 25-15, then defeated Campbell River 25-16, 25-10. Cedars will play No. 5 Chetwynd in a quarterfinal mach today at 11:15 a.m.
At the senior girls triple-A provincials in North Delta, the North Central zone-champion College Heights Cougars got off to a 2-0 start Thursday. The sixth-ranked Cougars began with a 2-1 (25-17, 21-25, 15-6) win over No. 10 Ballenas of Parksville, then defeated No. 16 Brookswood of Langley 2-0 (25-18, 25-12). College Heights faced No. 4 Point Grey of Vancouver in a late match Thursday.
At the same tournament, the No. 9 Duchess Park Condors opened with a 2-1 (18-25, 25-17, 19-17) win over No. 6 Crofton House of Vancouver, then lost to No. 3 Vernon 2-0 (25-27, 15-25). Duchess Park went on to meet No. 15 Rick Hansen of Abbotsford later Thursday.
On the double-A girls provincial court at Pacific Academy in Surrey, the D.P. Todd Trojans lost 2-0 (14-25, 14-25) to Elphinstone of Gibsons and were also defeated by Smithers 2-0 (16-25, 16-25) to Smithers. The Trojans played Kalamalka of Vernon in a late match.
