Before practice at Northern Sport Centre on Monday evening, UNBC Timberwolves women's basketball head coach Sergey Shchepotkin was standing at centre court wiping a generous helping of whipped cream off his face. At the beginning of the U Sports Canada Shoot for the Cure campaign Shchepotkin agreed to be pied in the face if his team was able to reach their fundraising goal of $500 and on Monday it was time for the coach to honour his deal. The team ended up raised a whopping $4147.88 which was over 8x their original goal. Not only that, they were also the top fundraisers in the entire 17-team Canada West Universities Athletic Associaion.
Surrounded by her teammates, 5th-year player Madison Landry had the honours and with a smiling face shoved the plate filled with whipped cream into her coach's face.
All funds raised will go to the Canadian Cancer Society and will help fund leading-edge research in the fight against cancer.
The Shoot for the Cure is an annual U Sports Canada fundraising campaign and first took place in 2007. Since its creation, the event has raised nearly $1.5 million.
