During his 15-year career coaching Canada's national cross-country team, Dave Wood gained a reputation as an innovator.
He took his skiers to high-altitude training camps and was never afraid to experiment with untested training methods, and that led to unprecedented top-10 placings for Canadians in World Cup and Olympic events.
"We didn't throw out the dishwater every spring and try something new but we continually fine-tuned," Wood said. "We were able to hang on to people and we were consistently patient with them as they got better."
