CIS a priority for new athletics director

His task is to promote the development of all things sporting at UNBC. That doesn't mean Jason Kerswill plans to make sweeping changes when he arrives in Prince George next month.

His task is to promote the development of all things sporting at UNBC. That doesn't mean Jason Kerswill plans to make sweeping changes when he arrives in Prince George next month.

Kerswill, announced as UNBC's new director of athletics and recreation on Tuesday, said a solid foundation is already in place, as evidenced by the school's improving soccer programs and strong basketball programs.

But, for him, a major focus will be to get UNBC teams into the top league in the country, Canadian Interuniversity Sport. UNBC has been trying to land its men's and women's basketball teams in the CIS for several years now and, after a one-year deferral by the CIS board of governors, had its application rejected in May. The CIS gave no clear reason for that decision.

"We're going to make sure that we get into the CIS," Kerswill told The Citizen on Tuesday.
