If Raegan Wiles doesn’t make it a pro hockey player, he might want to give billiards a try.
The 19-year-old Spokane Chiefs defenceman banked a shot from the face off circle off two Prince George Cougars defenceman and into the net with 32 seconds left in overtime to give the Chiefs 3-2 win over the visiting Cougars Wednesday night.
The goal came with Cougar forward Connor Bowie serving a holding penalty and with the teams playing 4-on-3.
Riley Heidt forced the extra session when he got his stick on a centring feed from Cougars defenceman Ethan Samson with 5:03 left in the third period. The 16-year-old centre now has 12 points (three goals, nine assists) in his last 10 games.
Bear Hughes and Case Bertholet scored in the second period for Spokane. Bertholet’s goal, with 27 seconds left in the period, came two minutes after Koen Ziemmer had tied the game when he rushed the net and got hauled down. A penalty shot was initially rewarded to Ziemmer but it was determined the puck cross the goal line before the net was dislodged and it was ruled to be a goal, his 18th of the season, on a Prince George power play.
The Chiefs outshot the Cougars 38-29. Tyler Brennan made 25 saves in the Cougar nets as the game’s third star.
The Cougars are without four injured players – forwards Cayden Glover, Fischer O’Brien and Jonny Hooker and defenceman Aiden Reeves.
