Cascades manage to dunk T-wolves

The Fraser Valley Cascades gave the UNBC Timberwolves more than they could handle Friday night on the CIS Canada West men's basketball court.

The Fraser Valley Cascades gave the UNBC Timberwolves more than they could handle Friday night on the CIS Canada West men's basketball court.

The top team in the Explorer Division showed why they've lost just one game all season, but the T-wolves were tough customers, losing a tight 77-71 decision at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre that ended the T-wolves' four-game win streak.

Jasper Moedt paced the Cascades with a 22-point effort, while Kevon Parchment contributed 16 points for the visitors. Franco Kouagnia shot a game-high 26 points for UNBC. Rhys Elliott and Jeff Chu each picked up 12 points for the T-wolves.

The win improved Fraser Valley's record to 16-1 and dimmed UNBC's playoff hopes as they dropped to 9-8 on the season. It didn't help the T-wolves' cause that the fourth-place Mount Royal Cougars defeated the Thompson Rivers WolfPack 89-79 Friday in Kamloops.

The T-wolves remained one win ahead of the Cougars (8-9). UNBC can clinch third place tonight with a win over the Cascades (7 p.m. start) if Thompson Rivers defeats Mount Royal in their rematch.

Meanwhile, in the women's game Friday at the Jago Dome, Fraser Valley scored an 88-75 victory over the T-wolves to improve their third-place record to 10-7. The Cascades were led by forwards Sarah Wierks, with 23 points and 14 rebounds, and Kaitlyn Broink, who collected 28 points. Vasiliki Louka, had 12 points for UNBC, while Sarah Robin and Jasprit Niijar each shot 11.

The T-wolves (2-15) remained last in the division. They'll host the Cascades again today (5 p.m. start).
