Cariboo Cougars winning streak ends, Northern Capitals sweep Chilliwack

The Valley West Hawks have ended the streak.

Less than a day after the Cariboo Cougars recorded their 11th-straight win with a 9-4 triumph Saturday night over in Richmond, the hometown Hawks got their revenge Sunday morning, defeating the Cougars 3-1.

That left the teams tied for first place in the B.C. Major Midget Hocley League, each with 47 points. The Hawks (23-6-1) have two games in hand over the Cougars (23-6-3). With their win Sunday, the Hawks edged the Cougars in the season series with a 2-1-1 record.

Reid Perepeluk led the Cougar cause Saturday with three goals. Josh Maser fired in a pair and singles went to Daine DuBois, Ethan O'Rourke, Ty Kolle and Riley Coish.

Dorrin Luding made 34 saves in the Cougars nets.

In the rematch Sunday, Trey Thomas was the lone Cougar marksman. Luding took the loss in goal.

The Cougars will be back in action this weekend at Kin 1.

They host the Kootenay Ice Saturday at 7:15 p.m. and Sunday at 9:15 a.m.

Capitals crush Rush

Meanwhile in B.C. Female Triple-A Midget Hockey League action Chilliwack on Sunday, Sage Desjardins collected two goals and Marissa Nichol also scored to lift the Northern Capitals to a 3-1 win, which completed a three-game sweep over the Fraser Valley Rush. Sarah Merx scored for the Rush.

The Capitals started the series Friday in Langley, where Taylor Beck's goal 5:01 into the second period was the only goal in a 1-0 game. On Saturday, also in Langley, Beck notched a third-period goal, while Cailly Mellott and Myah Bowal also scored to give the Capitals a 3-1 victory.

Amanda Pollack was the lone Rush goslscorer.

The three wins improved the Cougars' second-place record to 19-5-3. They reman three points behind the league-leading Greater Vancouver Comets (21-4-2), who reeled off three weekend wins over the Kootenay Wild in Nelson.

The Cougars have nearly four weeks to prepare for their next opponents, the Vancouver Island Seals, who will travel to Prince George for games at Kin 1, Feb. 19 and 20, and at CN Centre, Feb. 21.
