The Cariboo Cougars missed the chance to get to the .500 mark in the B.C. Hockey Major Midget League.
During a weekend road trip to Victoria, the Cougars settled for a split with the South Island Royals and now sit at 6-7-1, good for seventh place in the 11-team league. The Cats downed the Royals 3-1 on Saturday but fell 4-1 on Sunday.
In the Saturday victory, Isaiah Berra scored twice for the Cougars and teammate Steven Jandric had a goal and two assists. Josh Anderson replied for the Royals.
Jeremy Matte picked up the win in the Cariboo nets.
In Sunday's rematch, the Royals broke open a 2-1 game with a pair of third-period goals by Brandon Tutte. Haydn Hopkins and Jacob Malloch notched the other goals for South Island, while Riley Pettitt had the only marker for the Cougars.
With the results, the Royals bumped their record to 7-7-2. They are currently fifth in the standings, three points up on the Cats.
The Cougars will be back on CN Centre ice Saturday (4:15 p.m.) and Sunday (10:15 a.m.) for key games against the North Island Silvertips. At 6-6-2, the Silvertips are one spot ahead of the Cats in the standings.
