Prince George minor hockey product Michael Garteig has gotten the call from the Vancouver Canucks.
Garteig, a 25-year-old goaltender, signed a free-agent deal with the Canucks on April 29 and had been stopping pucks for the Alaska Aces of the ECHL. In six games with the Aces this season, he has posted a 5-1-0 record, a 2.52 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage.
Garteig came up through the B.C. Hockey League (Quesnel Millionaires, Prince George Spruce Kings, Powell River Kings, Penticton Vees) and went on to play NCAA hockey for the Quinnipiac University Bobcats. In four seasons with Quinnipiac, he compiled a 78-25-16 record, a goals-against average of 1.98 and a save percentage of .917.
Garteig's last NCAA season, 2015-16, was one for the record books. He finished with a 32-4-7 record, a 1.91 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage with eight shutouts. In the process, he established new Quinnipiac standards for wins and shutouts in a season. Garteig also led the Bobcats to a conference championship and a berth in the NCAA national tournament.
