Canada's Paralympic curlers win gold

Canada's wheelchair curling team has won gold at the 2014 Paralympics in Sochi, Russia. Canada defeated host Russia 8-3 in Saturday's gold medal final.

Canada defeated host Russia 8-3 in Saturday's gold medal final.

The rink, coached by Prince George resident Joe Rea, includes skip Jim Armstrong, third Ina Forrest, second Dennis Thiessen, and lead Sonja Gaudet.

Russia scored a deuce with the hammer in the first end, but Canada responded by scoring singles in the second, third and fifth ends, a deuce in the fourth end, and three more in the sixth end.

Canada advanced to the gold medal final after edging China 5-4 in the semifinal.

It's the first time Canada has swept gold in the men's, women's and wheelchair curling events.

Great Britain beat China 7-3 in the bronze medal game.

It's the third straight Paralympics gold medal for Canada's wheelchair curlers. Canada won gold in Turin in 2006 and in Vancouver in 2010.
