Called for diamond duty

Laviolette to play for host team at western championship

Cole Laviolette's baseball season isn't done just yet.

Laviolette, a 15-year-old local baseball player, has been added to the roster of the Newton Canadians for the Western Canadian championships, Aug. 12-15 in Newton. Laviolette normally suits up for the Prince George bantam double-A Knights. Both teams -- the Canadians and Knights -- competed at provincials this past weekend in Chilliwack, and the Newton coaching staff decided it wanted Laviolette's services at westerns.

Laviolette is mainly a catcher but can also pitch and play just about any position in the field. He's excited about the opportunity he has in front of him.

"It's an honour because I'll get to play with some of the best players in Western Canada -- it feels good," he said.

"It's pretty exciting because I'm supposed to be a huge part of the team."
