After a loss to one of the best junior girls basketball teams in B.C., the PGSS Polars bounced back for bronze.
At a weekend tournament hosted by Port Coquitlam's Terry Fox secondary, the Polars stepped onto the hardwood against the Princeton Rebels in a Saturday semifinal. The Rebels, ranked No. 5 in the province, handed PGSS a 39-21 loss.
But the Polars, not to be discouraged, then defeated the host Terry Fox Ravens 25-21 in the bronze-medal game.
"It was a good result," said Polars coach Ray Bourque. "We got to see what one of the best teams in B.C. looks like, so it was good to play against that level of competition.
"Princeton had height, they had outside shooters -- they all just looked a lot older compared to some of our girls. We've got a lot of work to do but I think we could be within 10 points of them on a good day."
Against the Rebels, Kelsey Videgain paced the Polars with nine points. In the medal game against the Ravens, PGSS got eight points from Olivia Letendre.
In their tournament opener, the Polars -- on the strength of 22 points from Letendre -- beat the Crofton House Cougars of Vancouver 41-22.
