Austyn Boulding's broken bat hit helped the Cariboo-Northeast (Zone 8) boys softball team get off to a good start at the 2012 BC Summer Games in Surrey.
The 14 year old was surprised when his composite metal bat snapped in half during a crucial at bat for the Zone 8 team. Boulding's bad luck turned out well for his team as Cariboo went on to beat Thompson-Okanagan 13-6.
Zone 8 then improved to 2-0 with an 8-5 win in their second game.
The girls softball team from Zone 8 haven't had the same luck as they're off to an 0-2 start after dropping a close 4-3 game before being lit up 18-2.
Inline hockey -
The boys roller hockey team fell to 1-3 after dropping their final round-robin game Saturday morning by a 3-1 score. The loss left them in second place in their pool. In the semifinal game against the first-place team from the other pool, Zone 8 lost 4-3.
Cariboo-Northeast will play for bronze.
Soccer -
After they were blanked 4-0 in their opening soccer match the boys Zone 8 team went on to post a pair of ties - 1-1 and 2-2 - to wrap up the round robin finishing third in their pool. It left the Zone 8 boys to play a semifinal game against the third-place team in Pool B that they easily won 7-0.
The Zone 8 girls wrapped up the tournament with an 0-4 record, placing fourth in their pool and losing to the third-place team in a semifinal contest 3-1. The round-robin loses were by scores of: 7-0, 6-1 and 11-0.
Volleyball -
After five straight losses the Zone 8 boys volleyball team ended its tournament with a straight sets 2-0 win.
