Boykova boosts UNBC to win over UBC-Okanagan

Fourth-year forward from Moscow records double-double to end four-game slide

The UNBC Timberwolves returned to their home court and rediscovered their winning ways.

They pulled it together after being outscored 22-8 in a shaky opening quarter and posted a 64-55 win over the UBC-Okanagan Heat Friday in front of crowd of about 400 spectators at Brownridge Court.

Victoriia Filatova led the way offensively, pacing the TWolves with 18 points. The Russian sophomore shot eight-for-12 from the field and went 2-for-3 from three-point land.

Player of the game Sveta Boykova was a force for UNBC with 16 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists. Amrit Manak put up 15 points and hauled in six rebounds.

Tsuki Tsuzuki, with 12 points, and Kelsey Funk, with 10, hit double figures for the Heat.

UNBC (2-5, sixth in Pacific) ended a four-game losing streak, The Heat (3-4) remain fourth in the Pacific standings.

The UNBC men (0-7) remain winless this season after a 10-point loss Friday to UBC-Okanagan (3-4) at the Northern Sport Centre.

Jalen Shirley scored 23 points, Jeffrey Tezo had a 20-point, seven-assist game and Jas Dhudwal delivered 16 points and 17 rebounds to pace the Heat.

Evgeny Baukin shot a career-high 30 points for UNBC and also picked up nine rebounds. TWolves point guard Justin Sunga hit double figures with 24 points and had eight assists.

Both TWolves teams will be back at Saturday at the Brownridge Court to face the Heat. The women’s game starts at 5 p.m., followed by the men at 7 p.m..
