Big finish results in bronze for bantams

Jayce Schweizer scored two goals on slapshots from the right point in the first period to give the Cougars the early lead in Sunday's game at the Kin Centre.

Dawson Brienan, Dean Whitcomb, Matthias Urbanski and Craig MacDonald also scored goals, while Austin Guignard had a pair of assists.

"Third place is pretty good," said Cougars coach Derek Miller. "We played a really solid game against Quesnel and we had balanced scoring during the whole tournament."

The Cougars completed round-robin play with a 3-1 record.

The Cougars defeated Quesnel 3-2 Friday morning on the strength of goals from Basnett, Whitcomb, and Kyle Boshier.

Basnett, MacDonald, Mason Roche, and Urbanski scored single tallies as Prince George edged Vanderhoof 4-3 Friday night.

The Cats lost 4-2 to Dawson Creek Saturday morning, as the team from the Peace country tallied two goals in the second period and two more in the third for the win. Alex Nimmo and Urbanski replied for the Cougars.

Their 3-1 record in Pool B meant they faced off against Fort St. John, which finished first in Pool A.

The semifinal game was tied 6-6 late in the third period when Fort St. John scored the winner with 18 seconds left in the game.

Fort St. John led 5-4 after two periods, but the Cougars responded with goals from Basnett and Nimmo to tie the game in the third period.

Basnett had a hat trick, while Boshier and Whitehead netted singles for Prince George.

The Cougars' loss put them the bronze medal game Sunday morning.

Williams Lake beat Fort St. John 7-5 in the final to win the tournament.

The Cougars will travel to Williams Lake the weekend after next to play in a bantam

tournament there.
