Biathlon and cross-country skiing go hand-in-hand and on Saturday the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club is staging a year-end fun relay event at Otway Nordic Centre which combines both sports.
The inaugural Mixed Cross-Country-Biathlon Relay spring toonie race starts at 2 p.m. with a mass start. The race is open to athletes, their parents and coaches from all nordic clubs in the region.
Each team will consist of two biathletes and two cross-country skiers. Each biathlete will have two shooting bouts and will ski three loops. Cross-country competitors will ski three laps. Each lap will be either 0.75 kilometre or two kilometres.
Course selections will depend on the number of entrants and weather conditions.
In each shooting bout, biathletes will be limited to five bullets in a magazine and will carry three extra shells per bout , which are to be loaded individually.
The race will provide an opportunity for athletes being considered for the Canada Winter Games team to race with their rifles attached.
Following the race, the Caledonia club's junior racers awards banquet will follow.
