Barracudas share UBC pool with U.S. Olympians

Nine swimmers from the Prince George Barracuda Swim Club had the opportunity to share the UBC pool with American Olympic medalists at the 2013 Mel Zajac Jr. International Canada Cup last weekend.

Nine swimmers from the Prince George Barracuda Swim Club had the opportunity to share the UBC pool with American Olympic medalists at the 2013 Mel Zajac Jr. International Canada Cup last weekend.

Also in the pool at the meet were five-time 2012 Summer Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte and Elizabeth Beisel, winner of the silver medal in the 400m individual medley (IM) and bronze in the 200m backstroke at the London Games.

In addition to swimming with the Olympians, the Barracuda swimmers finished 16th overall in the club standings while setting several new personal best and club records. Results from the Prince George competitors are:

Haley Black was seventh in the A final of the 200m backstroke with a time of two minutes, 20.34 seconds (2:20.34). In Black's other races she was sixth in the B final of the 400m IM (5:07.63); seventh in the A final of the 100m butterfly (1:02.47); 25th in the 200m IM (2:28.83); second in the A final of the 200m butterfly (2:17.12) and second in the C final of the 100m backstroke (1:06.33).

Danica Ludlow finished second in the B final of the 200m backstroke (2:20.53); eighth in the A final of the 200m freestyle (2:04.62); 55th in the 100m butterfly (1:08.48); seventh in the A final of the 400m freestyle (4:22.62); seventh in the A final of the 100m freestyle (59.19) and seventh in the 800m freestyle (9:03.91).

Patricia Fortier placed sixth in the B final of the 200m backstroke (2:22.98); eighth in the A final of the 400m IM (5:04.92); sixth in the C final of the 200m IM (2:26.71); 41st in the 200m breaststroke (2:50.63); 41st in the 200m butterfly (2:31.88) and 26th in the 100m backstroke (1:08.00). Fortier's times in the 200 and 400 IMs and the 200 fly were personal bests.

Julie Wing set four new personal bests in her six events. She set new PBs in the 200m backstroke (2:27.31) placing 29th; the 400m IM (5:25.18) placing 50th; the 400m freestyle (4:47.66) placing 59th and the 200m butterfly (2:42.42) placing 63rd. Wing also finished 83rd in the 200m IM (2:37.59) and 57th in the 100m backstroke (1:11.16).

Jessa Wing had three personal bests in the 400m freestyle (4:39.07); 200m IM (2:33.79) and 800m freestyle (9:34.21), finishing 34th, 52nd and 28th respectively. Wing was also 42nd in the 200m backstroke (2:30.42); 61st in the 200m freestyle (2:14.83) and 68th in the 100m backstroke (1:11.90).

Hannah Esopenko had four personal bests placing 43rd in the 100m breaststroke (1:19.58); 56th in the 400m IM (5:27.20); 46th in the 200m IM (2:32.57) and 57th in the 200m butterfly (2:37.06). Esopenko was also 44th in the 200m breaststroke (2:51.19) and 43rd in the 50m breaststroke (37.13).

Sava Yungman set a new PB and club record in the B final of the 200m butterfly finishing fourth. Other PBs were set with a 36th place finish in the 200m freestyle (2:00.44); a 23rd place finish in the 400m IM (4:57.20); a 26th place finish in the 400m freestyle (4:16.23) and a 57th place finish in the 100m butterfly (56.38). Yungman was also 25th in the 100m butterfly (59.65).

Josiah Binnema had a PB in all six of his events, setting a new club record in the 50m butterfly (26.79) finishing third in the C final. In his other events Binnema was 37th in the 200m backstroke (2:16.80); 33rd in the 100m butterfly (1:00.63); second in the C final of the 50m backstroke (29.43); eighth in the C final of the 200m butterfly (2:15.74) and eighth in the C final of the 100m backstroke (1:02.56).

Aiden Kim had two PB times, in a fourth place C final finish in the 100m breaststroke (1:09.86) and a 62nd place finish in the 100m butterfly. Other finishes were 78th in the 200m freestyle (2:07.66); 32nd in the 200m breaststroke (2:37.42) and fifth in the B final of the 50m breaststroke (31.64)
