The Prince George Under-16 Thunderbirds capped their summer Saturday with an 11-5 win over the Vancouver Lakers to finish 12th in the provincial B championships in Port Alberni with a 1-3 record.

The T-birds started Friday with a pair of close losses -- 4-1 to the Port Alberni Blazers and 6-5 to the South Delta Islanders. Earlier Saturday they were blanked 7-0 by the Sooke Cyclones.

While they didn't bring home any provincial medals, the bantams have built enough momentum this year to create a buzz about forming a midget team next season.

The Prince George Minor Girls Softball Association confirmed there will be a midget team in 2014 provided there are enough players registered.

n As teams in the PGMGSA house league wrapped up the season with a series of games Sunday at Freeman Park, the league announced its application to supply coaches for the Zone 8 team at the 2014 B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo has been approved.

Sara Hipson, a two-time All-American and all-star third baseman at the NCAA Division 2 level, was named head coach, while Walter Colk, who managed Prince George teams at provincial and Western Canadian championships level, will serve as an assistant coach on the Zone 8 team.
