Bantam Female Cats finish fifth at provincials

It was a fifth-place finish for the Prince George bantam female Cougars at the provincial playdowns in Vernon this week.

The Cougars, sponsored by Western Industrial Contractors, wrapped up the tournament with a 1-2-1 record while scoring just four goals. It was a promising start for the Cougars as they beat Vernon 2-1 in Sunday's opening game. Zoey Bartha and Katie Young scored for Prince George.

But an early wake-up call Monday and Tuesday proved difficult to overcome as the Cougars fell 10-0 to Tri-Cities and 5-1 against South Island. Olivia Johnston faced 49 shots in the loss to Tri-Cities while Mya Ziemer had the goal against South Island.

In the final game, the Cougars and West Kootenay faced off in a penalty-filled affair that ended in a 1-1 draw with Young scoring her second goal of the tournament for the Cougars.

The bantam Cougars consisted of five girls at 14-years-old and 12 girls at 13-years-old.

Five members of the Cougars - Jordan Shanks, Katie Young, Kate Arnold, Sydney Jordan and Grace Barlow - will continue their hockey season when they attend the under-16 B.C. Cup in Duncan in two weeks.
