The Prince George Track and Field Club selected Emma Balazs as its outstanding senior female athlete of the year during an awards banquet last weekend.
Balazs is in her first season of NCAA competition with the University of Idaho. The outstanding senior male athletes were 16-year-old Alex Nemethy of Vanderhoof, 17-year-old Jeremy Matte, 18-year-old Zach Matyas and 19-year-old Josh Hewitt.
In the 13-15-year-old age category, also called the Espoir division, Keiran Leboe was named male athlete of the year. The 15-year-old earned a spot on Team B.C. at the Legion Nationals in August, placing fifth in the hammer throw. Other Espoir athletes recognized were Ryan Gaiesky and Omar Medina. Gaiesky was sixth at the Legion Nationals in the 100m hurdles, while Medina was a double gold medalist at the Kamloops Centennial Meet in the 200m dash and long jump.
The top Espoir female athletes were Lauren Matheson and Shelby Jansen, who both took part in the Legion Nationals. Other athletes recognized were Emma Floris of Vanderhoof and Lindsay King and Kendel Rogers.
In the junior girls (nine to 12 year olds) the outstanding athletes were Makenna MacWhinnie, Casidy Campbell and Brooklyn Stauffer. For junior boys, Colin Stauffer, Andre Dreyer and Simon Nemethy were honoured.
The indoor season for the Prince George Track and Field Club starts in January at the Northern Sport Centre and the outdoor season resumes in April.
