Adey tournament set for Aberdeen

Golfers will be teeing it up this Saturday in the seventh annual Dillon Adey Memorial golf tournament at Aberdeen Glen.

Golfers will be teeing it up this Saturday in the seventh annual Dillon Adey Memorial golf tournament at Aberdeen Glen.

The tournament is a fundraiser for an endowment bursary fund started by Adey's friends in 2009 after he died at age 21 in a motorcycle accident near his home on Tabor Boulevard.

The fund, used to support economically-challenged students entered in programs at the College of New Caledonia, has since grown to $140,000. The goal this year is to raise $21,000.

Adey was a business student working for CN Rail as a brakeman when he was killed after colliding with a car near his Tabor Boulevard home. He bought his house when he was 19.

"He started out full-time (as a student at CNC) and then he got the job at CN and he decided to keep his business degree going and was doing it through correspondence," said Adey's father Perry.

"He was a golfer and I think he had his handicap down to six at one time. He liked sports. He played hockey, he was a snowboarder and a volunteer in the community."

At 16, Adey became the first male volunteer for the Evening of Pink, an annual fundraiser to support breast cancer research.

"He was the type of kid who, if he saw you shoveling your driveway and you were struggling, he'd stop and get out of his car and give you a hand and you wouldn't even know who he was by the time he was gone," said Perry.

"He bought his own house when he was 19. We didn't even know he was getting a loan, let alone thinking of buying a house. His sister lives in it now and raising her family."

The golf tournament starts Saturday with registration at 11 a.m. A dinner and dance will follow at the Treasure Cove Casino.
