Representatives from a local MP's office said they were told their offer of weekly meetings with the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion weren't required.

In response to comments made by Prince George branch president Bruce Gabriel in Thursday's Citizen that a commitment to meet weekly to discuss veterans issues went unfulfilled, Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies MP Bob Zimmer said that doesn't represent the discussion had with his office.

"I still want to provide somebody there and (constituency assistant Anita Bergstrom) was directed to go do it, but when she goes there (service officer John Scott) says 'Well sorry you really don't need to be here' and gets turned away," Zimmer said.

As previously reported, those proposed meetings were delayed during the summer due to a staff member being on sick leave.

When asked about it in August, Zimmer said he would be getting her replacement to start making those visits.

Bergstrom said she also followed up on her return to work in the fall and was advised that the weekly sit-down wasn't needed but that there was an understanding the Legion could reach out as necessary.
