Roughly 200 students are expected to converge on the Civic Centre tomorrow to help Prince George RCMP kick off an anti-gang project.
Students from Ron Brent, Quinson, Harwin and Nusdeh Yoh Elementary schools to learn how to recognize the signs of gang recruitment and launch a social media page on Facebook.
On Thursday, about 60 students from the John McInnis Centre's Alternate Education Program will be participating in a similar event, geared for an older audience.
Dubbed Step in, Step Up, the page provides youth with the opportunity to discuss anti-gang related topics and will be the main medium to promote upcoming events.
Those who "like" the page become eligible to win various prizes from community sponsors such as the Pine Centre Mall, the Family Y and Famous Players Theatres.
The first event to be featured on the Step In, Step Up page, is a video contest open to youth aged 13 to 18 years old. Entrants must create a 60 second public service announcement with an anti-gang message.
Applications are available at area high schools, Youth Around Prince George (YAP) and online at www.communitypolicing.princegeorge.ca. An e-mail address has been set up for those with questions, [email protected].
The project's funding comes from the provincial government's civil forfeiture program.
