An all-day symposium hosted by Science World earmarked for young girls is set to feature Prince George professionals.
Girls and STEAM 2020 is slated for Saturday (Nov. 7) and three members of The Exploration Place are set to join the free virtual event, as a result of COVID-19, in hopes of encouraging young women aged 11 to 13 to dream and pursue fulfilling futures in the sciences.
STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art/design and math.
Exploration Place Assistant Director Lisa Connor says she’s excited to participate, commending the continued strong relationship with Science World.
"When Science World approached us about this year’s event, our team was excited that it would be accessible to children virtually across our province," she said.
"I'm really excited we are a part of this event and for the keynotes,” adds Connor, noting that Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry is set to be the keynote speaker for the 2020 event.
“I've heard the mentor breakout rooms are filling up. There is still space to participate in keynote presentations and workshops."
Connor will be joined by her Prince George colleagues Christie Mason, Exploration Place Public Programming Coordinator, and Jaclyn Baxter, Tech Up Facilitator, during the symposium.
She and Mason will be mentors in guiding ‘tomorrow’s scientists,’ while Baxter will run open coding-based workshops after the conference.
Calling all future scientists, inventors, and innovators aged 11-13! If you love all things Science, Tech, Engineering, Arts/Design, and Math (STEAM), then you'll want to be involved in the Girls and STEAM 2020 Virtual Symposium.
“In addition to the mentorship sessions and exciting speakers, the day will be rounded out with two in-depth workshops presented by the BCIT School of Construction and the Environment and Genome BC,” reads an Exploration Place news release today (Nov. 4) about Girls and STEAM 2020.
“Explore the many sub-disciplines that go into building major infrastructure projects, and have a chance to solve a simulated outbreak scenario using the same types of data and tools that real epidemiologists use to trace outbreaks like COVID-19.”
