After hearing there was a gap in programming for a segment of teenagers in Prince George, the Family YMCA has launched a new summer program.
The Aurora Leadership Program is a new outdoor recreation experience for young people between the ages of 13 and 15.
For 10 days, teens can take part in a program that emphasizes outdoor activities, participation, fair play, team spirit and leadership skills while building an appreciation for the environment.
"Over the last years, we've had lots of comments from parents about there not being anything [for this age group]," said Karen Cameron, Family Y manager of resource development and communications.
To old for Camp Kanannaq and too young for other programs, Aurora allows these young people to take their summer camp experience to next level, or experience camp camaraderie for the first time.
"They're really an under-served segment of the community," Cameron said. "They're very vulnerable, that 13- to 15-year-old group."
This summer there are three sessions available (July 2 to 13, July 23 to Aug. 3 and Aug. 13 to 25) and during the days, there will be outdoor technical skill sessions; field trips to places such as the Ancient Forest, Fort George Canyon and Teapot Mountain; canoeing and archery lessons; interaction with Camp Kanannaq kids and a community presentation. Each session ends with a two-night camping trip at Mount Robson or Carp Lake.
"It's our first year doing it and we're very excited," said Cameron.
