The YMCA of Northern B.C. celebrated its 50th year of encouraging a healthy lifestyle in the region on Monday.

"I'm very proud to be part of the 50th anniversary," said Amanda Alexander, CEO of the YMCA of Northern BC. "There's a lot to celebrate. We have the highest membership to date and people are happy and connected to the community."

Three years ago the focus was put on family membership that included all ages.

"It's all about family inclusion," said Alexander. "Now children can come and be part of our recreational programs, side by side with adult programming. So it's really supporting the family. Everyone can pull up in one car and leave in one car and with our busy lifestyles, that's so valuable for families."
