The World Day of Prayer will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1088 Gillett St.in Prince George.
Women from several churches in Prince George have met to prepare for this city-wide celebration themed How Many Loaves Have You?
The theme acknowledges the importance of bread in our lives for nourishment, as a sign of hospitality and the building of community.
Planning committee members will lead the congregation in prayers prepared by Chilean women, read selected passages from Scripture and everyone joins in the singing of hymns.
Everyone attending will receive a slip of paper to tell about the "loaves" they can offer as gifts. An offering is taken to provide grants for projects in Africa, Europe, Asia, Latin America, Canada and United States.
After the service everyone receives a piece of bread as a sign of unity and community, and are invited to enjoy refreshments and hospitality. This year St. Mary's Catholic Women's League is hosting the event.
The World Day of Prayer began as an ecumenical day of prayer organized by women in Canada and the United States in 1920.
It grew to become an International World Day of Prayer in 1922 when Christians around the world began celebrating it on the first Friday in March. It is now observed in 170 countries
A World Day of Prayer International Committee meets once every four years to select the themes and countries for upcoming services.
