WorkSafeBC has fined a Prince George automotive repair shop $4,671.33 for continuing to spray flammable paint coatings in its repair bay despite an order from the fire department to stop.

N.K. Automotive Truck and Diesel Repair Ltd. was issued the fine on October 23 after a WorkSafeBC inspector found freshly painted truck and another prepped for painting in a repair bay, indicating that spraying was still being done.

"The firm was doing so without having taken proper steps to make the repair bays compliant with the B.C. Electrical Code for use in a hazardous environment," WorkSafeBC said in a posting on its website. "Ignition sources were in or near the repair bays, including electric heaters, a gas-fired steam cleaner, and energized electrical equipment."

Deeming the act a high-risk violation, WorkSafeBC issued a stop-work order.

The shop has not yet been brought into compliance, a WorkSafeBC spokesperson said Thursday.
