A $1.69-million contract has been awarded to a Prince George firm to lower the road surface where Highway 97 passes under a railway overhead in the Pine Pass.

Cariboo Construction Ltd. will start the work in June and be finished by the end of August, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said Friday.

It will raise the clearance at the West Pine to 5.35 metres from the current 4.85 metres to allow commercial vehicles to more easily move large machinery and resources in and out of the Peace.

The work builds on the $40-million Bennett Creek to Link Creek project on Highway 97 west of Chetwynd. To be completed this fall, it will improve corners to a 90 km/h standard and includes construction of four new bridges.
