Signaled by the installation of a fence around the perimeter of the property, initial work on the new Prince George RCMP detachment began this week.
A crew has moved into the existing building on the site at Fourth and Victoria, once a supermarket, to remove hazardous materials before a full demolition and removal of the asphalt occurs, city facility construction and maintenance manager Greg Anderson said Friday.
The demolition phase should take about two months, "and it'll tie in pretty well with the start of construction on the site."
The aim is to have the detachment completed by mid-day through 2013.
By that time a a 63,560-square-foot building will be in place, well up from the Prince George RCMP's current 33,000-square-foot home to nearly 200 police and civilian employees at 10th and Brunswick. $38.9-million has been budgeted for the project.
