Wood Wheaton will once again be the site of the B.C. Family Fishing Day event in Prince George this Saturday, and this year's edition is being raised to a new level.

An above-ground fishing pool will be filled with 500 trout for kids and parents to reel in - more than twice the number available last year. And there's no need to bring your own gear.

"I've got rods, everything is all set up," said Wood Wheaton manager Tom Sentes. "You've just got to have a kid with you. You can't fish unless you've got a kid."

In all, 1,00 trout were transported by special truck from Vancouver to the hatchery at Spruce City Wildlife. About 500 of the fish will also be used to stock local lakes.

"I've never seen so many fish, it's hilarious," said Sentes.

Most will be about two pounds in size but some could be larger - about 20 three pounders were caught in last year's event, Sentes said.

What's more, the first 50 families to show up will be given a free fishing kit, there will be a casting competition with prizes, the Prince George Family Y will have an inflatable train in place for the youngsters to play on and a dunk tank will be set up.

Draws for two tickets to Kiss and for a barbecue are planned and there is also a chance a reconditioned 1958 Corvette will grace the showroom. And hot dogs and hamburgers will be available.

One of many B.C. Family Days to be held across the province, the event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
