Two young women found out first hand just how dangerous the rising rivers can be Friday afternoon.

Shortly after 5 p.m. on June 8, the Prince George RCMP responded to Fort George Park after receiving several 9-1-1 calls about two females in the Fraser River.

Once on scene, the five responding officers located a 16-year-old female in the water struggling to keep hold of the eroding bank. A second woman, 22, was found a few metres downstream, holding on to vegetation. Both were severely intoxicated.

The police used the winch from an SUV police vehicle and lowered one member down roughly 15-foot embankment to the 16 year old. Through her panicked grabbing and scratching, the officer was able to secure her to the winch and she was lifted to safety.

Prince George Fire/Rescue helped to snag the second woman out of the fast-moving river and the two were transported by BC Ambulance Service to the University Hospital of Northern BC for treatment for hypothermia and other minor injuries.

One officer also had minor injuries, but did not require medical treatment.

After questioning witnesses, police believe the two females were sitting with their feet over the embankment when they fell in.
