A plea of guilty to a charge of dangerous driving causing death was entered at Prince George courthouse Thursday morning for Sandra Cassidy for fatally hitting Stanley Heavysides as he was walking along Ospika Boulevard nearly two years ago.

A pre-sentence report has been ordered and a date for sentencing will be set, probably in March, said Cassidy's lawyer, David Jenkins, who confirmed the guilty plea following a brief hearing in provincial court.

Heavysides, 48, died in hospital from injuries suffered Jan. 30 when he was struck at the intersection of Ospika and Melody Crescent.

Witnesses said they saw an SUV cross the Ospika Boulevard median twice before it struck Heavysides, a nearby fence and a tree.

The SUV then reversed, said one onlooker, and would have hit Heavysides again had nearby motorist, Robbin Shingler, not driven his Pontiac Sunfire between the SUV and the motorist. The SUV then drove away.

Police found the license plate of the SUV at the scene, which led RCMP to Cassidy, now 70 years old.

Crown prosecution agreed to stay charges of criminal negligence causing death, impaired driving causing death, causing an accident resulting in death, and failing to stop at an accident scene involving death, Jenkins said.

"It's a sad situation all the way around," Jenkins said.
