One person is dead and others are injured after a serious crash near Vanderhoof Monday night (Jan. 14).

Mike Halskov, a media relations officer with B.C. RCMP Traffic Services, says emergency crews were called to Highway 16 near Shanley Road (some 10 kilometres east of Vanderhoof) around 6 p.m.

Investigators determined an eastbound Ford SUV had crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a loaded fuel tanker truck heading westbound as well as two other vehicles that were behind the truck.

The female driver of the SUV died at the scene, according to a press release, while the passengers in the other vehicles suffered minor injuries.

Halskov says there was no fuel spillage from the tanker truck.

Road conditions were slippery and foggy at the time of the crash, notes the release, and the temperature was below freezing.

The highway reopened around 5 a.m. this morning.

The collision remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call Prince George Regional Traffic Services (Vanderhoof) at 250-567-2222.
