Winter Games lining up volunteers

The process of getting the core group of volunteers in place for the 2015 Canada Winter Games will advance a step next week.

The process of getting the core group of volunteers in place for the 2015 Canada Winter Games will advance a step next week.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, organizers in Prince George will be hosting "Games 101" sessions for volunteers who will be asked to put in some extra time in the lead up to the event.

"There are going to be people who just want to be volunteers at Games time just to be a part of it," said spokeswoman Alyson Gourley-Cramer. "But then there are the people that we are going to really rely on - the experts in the community in terms of sport, medical facilities and just organizing celebrations, ceremonies, people who speak French."

The sessions, which are now completely booked, will provide an overview of the Games and the types of skills organizers are seeking.

"This is one of the first times in the process that we've started to get really specific with our volunteers," said Gourley-Cramer.

Over 2,000 people have already signed up to volunteer.

In all, about 4,500 volunteers will be needed to host the 18-day event, which will draw 2,350 athletes and 950 coaches, as well as thousands of visitors, according to organizers.
