Wind blows flight off course

Saturday night's strong winds resulted in power outages across the city, most notably at the Prince George Airport, where an Air Canada flight was forced to turn back.

Airport spokesperson Lindsay Cotter confirmed there was a temporary outage which left the runway only partially lit by a backup generator. The flight, which left Vancouver at 10:20 p.m. was supposed to land at 11:25 p.m. But the pilot made the decision to turn back south before the generator had restored the runway's full lights.

Once those lights were back up, the flight turned back to Prince George and landed safely at 12:46 a.m.

Environment Canada had issued a wind warning for the region, with gusts expected up to 90km/h.
