As the Cariboo Memorial Hospital (CMH) continues to struggle with staffing its maternity ward, pregnant women expecting to head to the hospital May 30 to June 3 are being advised to head to Kamloops.

Interior Health (IH) is directing pregnant women to Royal Inland Hospital during the six-day period, according to a news release.

"The disruption in service is due to a lack of trained maternity nurses during that four-day period," states the health authority. "IH regrets the impact this interruption to services will have on expectant mothers and families and continues to work to restore full maternity services in Williams Lake as quickly as possible."

Women with low-risk deliveries will be able to resume going to the CMH at 7:30 p.m. on June 3.

Full maternity services are expected to return to the hospital in July, according to IH.

Two new maternity nurses were hired in April.

Another will join the team in June and five CMH nurses should finish up training to become maternity nurses in July.

Expected mothers were also sent to Kamloops and Prince George in late February due to the low number of staff at CMH.
