Williams Lake man named in jail death

Blaine Conrad Sargent, 19, of Williams Lake has been identified as the inmate who died last week while in custody of the Prince George Regional Correctional Centre.

Deputy regional coroner Donita Kuzma confirmed Sargent died on Sept. 21 after collapsing at the prison.

"He was taken to the University Hospital of Northern B.C., where he later died," Kuzma said. "This is an open and ongoing investigation."

According to court documents, Sargent was in jail awaiting trial for one count of breaching his probation on Aug. 16, 2011 and three counts of breaching a recognizance order or undertaking from Aug. 25, 2011.

According to court records, Sargent appeared in court in Williams Lake the morning of his death.

An internal investigation into the death is also being conducted by B.C. Corrections and the B.C. Court Services Branch.
