The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has issued an evacuation alert for Norman Lake after a wildfire broke out in the area Friday afternoon.
The blaze covered about 10 hectares about two kilometres northwest of the lake, B.C. Wildfire Service information officer Amanda Reynolds said at about 4 p.m.
A total of 27 firefighters are on the scene and are being assisted by airtanker drops of fire retardant and water bucketing by helicopter. The fire is entirely surrounded by fire retardant, Reynolds said.
"Airtankers and helicopters that are picking up water from Norman Lake need plenty of room to manoeuvre," Reynolds said. "In the interest of air crew and public safety, recreational boaters are urged to stay away from areas where airtankers or helicopters are operating."
Cause of the fire remained under investigation.
About 260 properties are in the affected area. Residents are asked to prepare themselves for an evacuation.
Steps include: - gather important papers and move valuables to alternate locations; - make arrangements for pets to be moved to a safe location; - make arrangements for livestock for a safe alternative location in case an evacuation order is issued - prepare a 72-hour personal emergency kit for you and your family; remember to include any necessary medications in your kit.
The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George’s emergency operations centre at First and George is open to help residents.
