A forest fire has periodically reduced traffic to single-lane alternating along Highway 97 southwest of Chetwynd, according to DriveBC.

Drivers are urged to watch for crews for an eight-kilometre stretch between Powder King Road and Old Hasler Road.

As of late-morning Thursday, the fire more than doubled to eight hectares over the previous 24 hours but with the help of some rain, it was expected it would be brought under control.

"It will just be crews on site today, no heavy machinery or air support required," a B.C. Wildfire Service spokeswoman said.

It began when a grass fire burning alongside the highway got into nearby deciduous trees.
