Spring break started early for some students at Spruceland Traditional Elementary Friday due to a smell of fire and smoke in the school in the morning.

Students and staff at Spruceland Elementary School got an alarming start to spring break on Friday.

The school was closed before classes even started Friday but not before some children had already arrived for the day's classes.

"The reason for this action: burning smell and substantial smoke in the building," said School District 57 superintendent Brian Pepper at about 8:45 a.m. "Staff are contacting parents to arrange safe transportation home."

Firefighters and SD57 maintenance staff responded to the signs of fire, but nothing further was provided by officials from either department. The cause of the disruption was not explained as of deadline.
