The simple act of being courteous while driving can prevent accidents and save lives.

When a motorist indicates the need to change lanes, it's courteous to allow them to enter, said RCMP Const. Lesley Smith.

"You see a lot of motorists on the road who stubbornly refuse to let a vehicle change into their lane ahead of them," she said. "Being courteous can decrease the chances of a collision as well as situations of road rage."

In a case where a driver wants to cross a solid line, turning left into a business entrance where there is no traffic device, they need to be aware of the oncoming traffic and the traffic waiting behind them.

"Assess the oncoming traffic stream. If it's lengthy and will cause a pile-up of cars behind you, you should consider proceeding to the next available turn.

"Motorists behind the vehicle wishing to turn should also have some patience before getting frustrated. That extra five or 10 seconds of patience can save lives and prevent an accident," Smith said.

"Although it is not illegal to cross a solid line into a business, it can become a problem when it creates a traffic hazard through interfering with the traffic flow."
