Wheelin' Warriors look to top fundraising goal

The Wheelin' Warriors of the North are gearing up for their second crack at the Ride to Conquer Cancer.

The Wheelin' Warriors of the North are gearing up for their second crack at the Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Team founder Karin Piche and her group of dedicated cyclists raised close to $100,000 when they took part in the BC Cancer Foundation fundraiser last year and are looking to top that total this time out.

Currently 29 people have committed to being part of Piche's 2014 team and each rider is expected to raise at least $2,500. The two-day ride begins in Vancouver on June 14 and participants have four route options to choose from. Two routes begin in Vancouver and finish in Seattle and the other two both begin and end in Vancouver.

The team has started its fundraising with events like bake sales, but their major event is coming up on April 12 with a dinner and dance at the Treasure Cove Casino.

BC Cancer Foundation vice-president of development Erik Dierks will be the keynote speaker.

Tickets to the dinner and dance are $35 and have been going fast, but some are still available by contacting Piche at 250-617-1507.

The Wheelin' Warriors have also partnered with The Movement Group Fitness Mecca to hold an indoor cycling fundraiser on May 4. Open to anyone in the community, there will be a series of 30- and 60-minute rides throughout the day. A minimum $20 donation is required to participate.

More information for that event is available by calling 250-565-4602.
