Wet summer only temporary delay for Boundary Road

Construction of Boundary Road will be done on time, despite a wet summer which delayed construction, according to city project manager Bob Radloff. The 6.8 kilometre, $28 million project is slated to be complete by October, 2012.

Construction of Boundary Road will be done on time, despite a wet summer which delayed construction, according to city project manager Bob Radloff.

The 6.8 kilometre, $28 million project is slated to be complete by October, 2012. Once complete, Boundary Road will link Highway 16 East - via Boeing and Gunn roads - to Highway 97 South near Happy Trails RV.

"We're about 30 per cent complete," Radloff said. "The wet weather has not been helpful, but now this good weather is helpful. I don't think it has knocked us off the ultimate schedule, but it has delayed us - how could it not?"

Construction of the traffic circle intersection at Highway 16 and Boeing Road is expected to be complete by Oct. 31, 2011. Paving is also expected to be completed on a small stretch connecting to Highway 97 to provide winter access to local residents, Radloff said.

"The whole right of way has been cleared, and the earthworks from Highway 97 to Boeing Road are done. Now we're putting in the water, sewer and storm lines," he added.

Paving of the main section of the road will take place next year, Radloff said.

"These soils are kind of sensitive soils, so it doesn't hurt to have them sit over the winter and settle," he said.

The Pineview clay soils are particularly challenging to build on.

The completed road will be an undivided, two-lane road with a bicycle lane and street lights.

Boundary Road will provide a bypass route for the city and will serve the proposed airport logistics park under development in the area.
