Three wins in four nights for Red Sox, back-to-back comebacks for Gladiators

Highlights from Prince George’s Senior Men’s Baseball League (PGSBL) from the week ending on Friday (July 6).

Tuesday, July 2

  • 4 - Queensway Auto World Red Sox
  • 2 - JRJ Construction Orioles

Despite giving up four walks, the Red Sox defense came through for pitcher Ajay Nickolette.

Catcher Bucky Schmidt reeled in an RBI double to score the final two runs for the Red Sox, securing their margin of victory.

Wednesday, July 3

  • 5 - Queensway Auto World Red Sox
  • 3 - Inland Control and Service Tigers

The Red Sox were in danger of losing their undefeated season after the Tigers made strategic bunts in the sixth inning, along with a Josh Young single to make it 3-1.

In the bottom half of the frame, the Sox went to work on the sticks to score four runs, including another RBI double from Schmidt.

Pitcher Curtis Sawchuk had nine strikeouts before Matt Knight came to the mound in the seventh to close out the team’s 10th win of the season.

Thursday, July 4

  • 7 - D.O.B Contracting Gladiators
  • 6 - JRJ Construction Orioles

The Gladiators made a three-run comeback against the O’s, including a walk-off single by Chris Allard to close out the team’s second victory of 2019.

Third baseman Mike Schwab went three-for-five (3-5) at the plate and scored each time he got on base, a double and two singles.

Friday, July 5 (Doubleheader)

  • 11 - Queensway Auto World Red Sox
  • 8 - Prince George Surg Med Midget Knights

Eleven runs were tallied by the Red Sox in their 11th win of the season in 11 games.

The designated visitors scored their final six runs in the top of the seventh frame, including three off an RBI double by Evan Potskin.

The Knights also scored six runs an inning earlier to get to their game-high eight runs courtesy of Brady Pratt and Jacob Ross’ RBI singles.

Friday, July 5 (Doubleheader)

  • 7 - D.O.B Contracting Gladiators
  • 6 - Inland Control and Services Tigers

They had a hard time on the sticks, but the Gladiators came out swinging in the bottom of the final inning.

Centerfielder Regan Lokken was the hero with an RBI single to bring in the game-winning run, marking the second time in back-to-back nights his team has won on a comeback.

Tigers pitcher Scott Atherton earned eight strikeouts in the loss.

STANDINGS

  • 11-0 = Red Sox
  • 5-6 = Knights
  • 4-5 = Orioles
  • 4-8 = Tigers
  • 3-8 = Gladiators

There are five games scheduled at Citizen Field next week starting Monday (July 8) at 7 p.m. with the Red Sox host the Orioles.
